Being non-profit also allows us to think beyond the classroom.

ISD has always believed that a strong school community includes the whole family. We can invest in programmes, events, partnerships, support structures and opportunities that bring people together and help families feel connected.

For an international community in particular, that matters. Many families arrive in Düsseldorf without an established network. A school can therefore become much more than the place their children attend each day. It can become a community.

That is something we value deeply.

A school shaped by its community

Being non-profit also shapes how our school is governed.

ISD is organised as an eingetragener Verein (e.V.), or registered association. Rather than being owned and operated by a private individual or family, the school belongs to its community.

Parents and  employees are members of the association and elect Board members who help guide the strategic direction of the school. This ensures  that the people closest to our students and their learning have a voice in the future of the school.

A different kind of school

Ultimately, being non-profit shapes more than how ISD is structured. It shapes how we think about our priorities.

Our success is not measured by the profit we generate, but by the education and experience we provide. On the one hand, this gives us the freedom to make decisions with the long term in mind. On the other, it keeps us financially and strategically accountable. Every investment needs to strengthen the school, support our students and protect ISD’s long-term sustainability. Being non-profit does not remove the need for sound financial decisions; it makes them even more important, because every decision must serve the school, our students and ISD’s future.

For families choosing a school, we believe that distinction is worth understanding.

At ISD, education is not our business. It is our purpose.
