PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME
The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the International School of Düsseldorf share the belief that every child has the potential to learn, both as an individual and as part of a learning community.
THE PYP COVERS EIGHT YEARS of a child's school life, from 4 to 11 years of age. In order to help each child reach their full potential, ISD makes thoughtful use of its resources. We use time, people, places, spaces, materials, and technology flexibly in order to inspire our students and improve their learning.
AT IT'S HEART, LEARNING IN THE PYP IS INQUIRY-BASED. We invite children to build on their innate curiosities, interests, and talents. While developing skills and exploring content in a variety of subject areas, students ask questions, investigate solutions, gather information, discuss their findings and experiences, create new knowledge, reflect on their newfound understandings, and take action.
WE REFER TO THIS PROCESS AS CONCEPTUAL LEARNING, whereby children add new thinking to their existing knowledge and experience, explore connections throughout the programme, and apply new understandings in creative ways. This also means that students may have different learning goals and strategies for achieving these goals, based on their individual needs. The beauty of the PYP is that it is flexibly designed to meet the varying needs, interests, and abilities of different children.
THE IDEA OF THE WHOLE CHILD IS CENTRAL to everything we do here at ISD. We believe in nurturing the intellectual, social, and emotional health and well-being of our students. We also believe that learning is a social process, and that working together creates opportunities for all members of our learning community to benefit from our diverse international character.
