THEATRE

Our students really do experience the full theatrical gamut: professional sound and lights, original set designs, exquisite costumes lovingly sewn by parent volunteers. From theatre of antiquity, to Shakespeare, Brecht, and Broadway musicals, no production is too ambitious for our dedicated team of students, teachers, and parent volunteers.

In addition to offering a full IB Theatre Arts curriculum within the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the IB Diploma Programme (DP), we also produce four large-scale productions each school year; two middle school performances and two upper school performances.

We have two theatre spaces on our senior campus. The main stage (the Dahms theatre) seats 350, and our small, black box theatre offers flexible seating and staging options for more intimate productions.

MUSIC

Music embraces all of ISD’s core values, and thanks to our truly diverse international community, we are fortunate to be able to incorporate music from all over the world into our programmes.

Throughout the school year, the music department puts on a variety of concerts and performances including the ISD winter concert series; grade 6 MYP performance concert; grade 7 MYP performance concert; ISD jazz evening; ISD spring concert series; International Fest; World Citizenship Night. We also enjoy a long-standing relationship with the Association of Music in International Schools (AMIS), giving students the opportunity to travel to orchestra, band and choral festivals across Europe and perform with other students from around the world.

Music at ISD is growing in all areas, and by allowing students to create and perform music from around the world, we all benefit from a deeper cultural understanding of each other. As the writer, Kahlil Gibran, once wrote: ‘Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife'.

SOUND & LIGHTS

The ISD Sound and Lights team provides technical support during events, such as setting up and managing speakers, or programme lighting for theatre productions and live events.

Our members have the opportunity to learn about and operate industry-grade equipment. With the help of the dedicated Sound and Lights team, community events are always a great success!

Across the school year we operate over 40 events such as the International Fest, theatre performances, school assemblies, and concerts.

ISD_Music_Haruka_quote

I love that we have so much freedom in the music programme. I chose solo performance for the IB, but I also play in the string ensemble. We also have the group AMIS (Association for Music in International Schools). Students from all over the world come together to practise, and we have a concert on the last day. In tenth grade I went to Salzburg for AMIS. It was a great experience meeting students from other countries.

Maxi quote (circle)

ISD always supported my interest in technology. Teachers let me help with the stage systems at the International Fest when I was only in fifth grade. I wanted to understand how everything worked. ISD Sound and Lights was a big interest for me, and I took IB theatre because it allowed me to do all of the technical things I like.
