Elementary School

At ISD, our elementary school students enjoy an educational programme in a caring environment designed to foster the love of learning at a very early age.

Our caring, well-qualified staff quickly integrate children who may be experiencing a new culture and environment for the first time by giving them a sense of place and belonging.

The Early Childhood Centre houses our four year olds and provides a full-day programme. A careful mix of structure and play encourages the children to explore and find success in a broad range of classroom activities. Specialist teachers take the children for physical education and music and movement.

Children from Preparatory to grade 5 (ages 5 to 10) also attend a full-day programme. Homeroom teachers instruct children in the core subjects of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. Specially trained educators teach German, art, music, physical education, IT and library skills. English as an Additional Language and Learning Support are offered to students who benefit from these programmes.

All subjects are delivered in the context of the Primary Years Programme from the International Baccalaureate Organization.

Students go on various field trips to explore stimulating, interactive learning environments. We encourage our children and their parents to share their traditions.  For example, we participate in the annual Kaiserswerth St. Martin's parade, where students become part of a German cultural tradition with the local community. This is one way students learn to respect other cultures as well as take pride in their own. ISD is committed to making the early years of your child's education a challenging and enjoyable learning experience.

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme at ISD

The Elementary School uses the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme as its curriculum framework. This has been designed specifically for international schools and leads into the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programmes also offered at ISD. The Elementary School is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

The Primary Years Programme offers a curriculum which is:

Internationally minded: The curriculum synthesizes the best of educational systems around the world and allows students to transfer smoothly from school to school.

Inquiry based: The PYP is committed to structured inquiry as a vehicle for learning, building upon prior knowledge and experience and emphasizing how to learn and how to find out things we want to know.

Integrated: The subject areas of mathematics, language arts, science and social studies are taught through interdisciplinary themes which help students see connections between academic subjects.

The PYP focuses on the development of the whole child, in the classroom as well as in the world outside, through other environments where children learn. It offers a framework that meets children’s academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural needs.
